Jimmy Teoh’s Journey from Humble Beginnings to Leading the Business

With over three decades of experience, Jimmy Teoh Ghin Sieng’s career journey is a testament to resilience, adaptability and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As the Manager of Branch Operations at Tractors Petroleum Services Sdn Bhd in Miri, Sarawak, Jimmy leads teams and drives business performance. But his journey with Sime began on the ground, quite literally, as a hands-on technician.
Jimmy began his career in 1995 as an electrician, immersing himself in service and maintenance work. These early years laid a strong technical foundation, equipping him with practical expertise and a deep understanding of operations at the frontline. Over time, he progressed to Senior Electrician and subsequently into supervisory roles such as Chargehand and Parts Supervisor, where his responsibilities expanded from technical execution to managing teams and coordinating operations. Each step forward came with opportunities to take on greater responsibility and grow.
As his career evolved, Jimmy gained valuable exposure in managing complex projects and working closely with customers and stakeholders. A defining turning point came through heading a turnkey project at the Shell Labuan Crude Oil Terminal, one of the most significant milestones in his career. It was one of the company’s first brownfield upgrading projects of its kind and carried both operational and strategic importance.
What made the experience particularly challenging was the lack of prior experience within the company and limited internal resources. To overcome this, Jimmy took the initiative to learn independently and seek guidance from external experts, including working closely with a maintenance manager from a customer steel mill. He grew from a hands-on technician into someone who could think and operate at an engineering level, despite not having formal university training. This pivotal experience significantly accelerated his professional development. The successful completion of the project strengthened trust with the client and opened the door to similar opportunities with major players such as Shell and Petronas.
Jimmy’s progression into leadership roles, including Manager of Branch Operations and Head of Branch for Miri and Labuan, reflects a career shaped by both experience and opportunity. Despite the increased scope, his sense of purpose remains grounded in problem solving and delivering results. “I feel most fulfilled when solving problems and securing contracts,” he says. “What makes it meaningful is that success is always shared with the team.” For Jimmy, leadership is about empowering people and helping them grow in both technical expertise and commercial capability.
In a rapidly changing business environment, Jimmy emphasises the importance of staying adaptable. “I’ve learned the importance of being able to unlearn and relearn,” he shares. This mindset has helped him stay responsive to evolving industry demands while continuously improving how he leads and makes decisions.
Throughout his career, he has been exposed to diverse stakeholders from customers to international suppliers, broadening his understanding of different business practices and perspectives. These interactions have contributed to both his professional and personal growth, offering insights that go beyond his immediate role.
As a leader, Jimmy is committed to fostering inclusive growth within his team. He actively supports women in leadership, with around 30 percent of his direct reports comprising female employees in key frontline roles. By focusing on capability and potential, he ensures equal opportunities for development and advancement, reinforcing a culture where individuals are empowered to grow.
Beyond work, Jimmy places strong emphasis on maintaining balance in his life. He prioritises spending time with family and friends and values taking extended breaks when possible. This balance supports his overall wellbeing and allows him to sustain his performance over the long term.
Looking ahead, Jimmy aims to continue growing as a leader while building high performing teams that deliver sustainable business results. He also hopes to contribute more strategically to business expansion and innovation within the organisation.
“I see my career as a journey of continuous growth rather than a fixed path,” he reflects.
Reflecting on his experience, he encourages young Malaysians to take ownership of their careers. “Be proactive, seek opportunities and have the courage to speak up,” he advises, underscoring his belief that growth is driven as much by individual mindset as it is by opportunity.
