As Malaysia celebrates another year of independence, it is a timely moment to reflect on the values that define our nation, such as unity, resilience and progress.

For Jaspreet Kaur, a Senior Executive in the Group Transformation department at Sime, these values are not just abstract ideals but are lived experiences that have shaped both her personal journey and professional path. Her story is one of seizing opportunities, building trust and contributing back to the organisation and country that helped shape her.

Jaspreet’s career trajectory is a story of dedication and determination. She joined Sime in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic, returning from her studies in the United Kingdom to face two weeks of hotel quarantine and an uncertain job market where most companies had frozen hiring. Against the odds, she secured a role with Group Finance at Sime’s head office. She saw it as a platform for invaluable exposure and direct visibility to senior leadership. Starting her journey as a Sime scholar under the Sime Scholarship Programme, she exemplifies how talent, when nurtured with the right support, can flourish. Today, she works in the Group Chief Executive Officer’s (GCEO) office on strategic projects that help shape Sime’s long-term vision.

Jaspreet’s growth reflects the wider values of Sime, where individuals are provided the opportunity to lead, learn and contribute meaningfully. Her early career in Group Finance taught her that credibility is built through consistency—delivering on even the smallest tasks with excellence so that leaders can entrust you with greater responsibilities. Her experience working across teams and divisions also highlights the strength of Sime’s collaborative and inclusive work culture.

“I work hard to foster cross-functional collaboration. For example, coordinating with divisions to prepare presentations for the GCEO that showcase efforts across the Group,” she shares. In addition to that, she has also represented the company at investor relations events to align stakeholders with Sime’s long-term vision. These experiences, she says, have broadened her understanding of the company’s impact across industries and geographies, while also sharpening her ability to connect people and ideas.

For Jaspreet, Merdeka holds personal meaning that connects with her values and role. She emphasises that Merdeka is a reminder that the next chapter of Malaysia’s story depends on how we choose to show up for our teams, our communities and each other.

At the end of the day, we will always have one thought about what makes us proud Malaysians and for Jaspreet, she is where she is today because of what this country made possible, access to education, opportunity and mentorship in one of Malaysia’s most respected companies. “That privilege comes with responsibility to support others the way I was supported.” For her, giving back can be as simple as mentoring an intern, sharing insights with a colleague, or ensuring that every project she works on contributes to a bigger purpose.

Looking ahead, Jaspreet’s hope for Malaysia echoes the spirit of unity and inclusion in seeing a country that continues to be united while progressing forward and creating equal opportunities for everyone.

Jaspreet’s journey reflects what Merdeka represents, the freedom to grow, strength in diversity, and progress through unity. Her contributions within Sime are a testament to how individual dedication, paired with the right opportunities, can create meaningful impact in the workplace and beyond.
