Terberg Tractors Malaysia Advances Local Industrial Capabilities for Global Markets
KUALA LUMPUR, 29 September 2026 – At ports and logistics hubs around the world, terminal tractors play an indispensable role in keeping global trade moving. Among the leading manufacturers of these specialist vehicles is the Royal Terberg Group BV, a Netherlands-based company with more than 155 years of engineering heritage. In Malaysia, this global expertise is represented by Terberg Tractors Malaysia (TTM), a 50:50 joint venture company established between Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd and the Terberg Group.
What began as a local distribution arrangement in 1999 has since evolved into a fully-fledged manufacturing and worldwide export operation. As of end-June 2026, TTM has shipped more than 8,000 terminal tractors produced in Malaysia to customers across over 50 countries spanning Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. Today, TTM’s facility in Pasir Gudang, Johor serves as Terberg's regional centre for Asia Pacific, overseeing manufacturing and assembly, supply chain management, regional distribution, product support and R&D activities. Its annual production capacity stands at 1,000 units, supported by a 100% local workforce of more than 300 Malaysians.

A key chapter in TTM's growth has been its push into battery-powered electric terminal tractors. Following the launch of the YT200EV in 2022, TTM introduced the next-generation YT201EV in May 2026, recording more than 300 units sold globally to date. This momentum is further strengthened by its co-development of a new cabin design with the Terberg Group in the Netherlands, which delivers a 10% performance improvement at a lower construction cost.
Investment in manufacturing capability has kept pace with this growth. Since 2024, TTM has invested a total of more than RM12 million in facility enhancements, including a blasting and painting shop, warehouse expansion and laser machine equipment. An integrated automated production line accommodates both diesel and electric tractor assembly. The facility also features an automatic blasting system, the first of its kind within the Terberg Group.
Alongside this, TTM is advancing digital and automation technologies. Terberg Connect, a telematics system installed on 7,000 Terberg units globally, enables customers to monitor fleet performance, optimise maintenance and improve operational efficiency in real time. TTM is also working with strategic partners on the development of autonomous terminal tractors, supporting Malaysia's National Policy on Industry 4.0.
TTM is also investing in the development of its Malaysian workforce through leadership and technical development programmes, building a pipeline of local talent to support increasingly advanced manufacturing and engineering activities.
Beyond its own operations, TTM's supply chain footprint in Malaysia is significant. The company spends approximately RM100 million annually with more than 200 active local suppliers, representing about 50% of its total materials spending. These include Malaysian companies supplying key components such as engines and transmissions. TTM is also developing local suppliers to participate in Terberg's global supply chain for cabin and chassis production.
As part of Sime Industrial, TTM demonstrates how long-standing international partnerships can create value by combining global expertise with Malaysian capabilities. Its journey reflects Malaysia's growing competitiveness in advanced, export-oriented manufacturing, while contributing to the national GEAR-uP agenda.
