From Scholarship to Leadership: Ashok Jonathan’s Journey at Sime

He joined Sime in 2012 as a scholarship recipient studying electrical power engineering. What began as support for his studies soon developed into a career built within the Group, shaped by evolving roles and expanding responsibilities. 

After completing his SPM, he enrolled at Universiti Tenaga Nasional and applied for scholarships from several organisations. Sime’s offer stood out, not only for the financial support but also the exposure it provided beyond the classroom, from industry attachments and mentorship to opportunities to build networks across the Group. As a Sime scholar, he was given early insight into real-world operations, allowing him to develop both professionally and personally while still pursuing his studies. 

At the time, his understanding of Sime was largely linked to plantations. That perspective changed as he discovered the Group’s involvement in the energy sector, which aligned with his field of study. Through the scholarship, he gained early hands-on experience at the Port Dickson Power Station, where he built his technical foundation. 

“I thought my career would remain in power generation,” he reflects. 

That direction shifted when Sime exited the power plant business. Faced with the choice of continuing along a familiar path or exploring new opportunities within the Group, he chose to stay. 

He moved into Sime Industrial during a period of restructuring, where systems needed to be rebuilt. The transition required him to adapt quickly and take on responsibilities beyond his technical training. At the same time, it gave him the opportunity to be part of rebuilding a business from the ground up. 

Through this experience, he gained exposure to the broader business cycle, from recovery to growth and managing uncertainty. Each phase expanded his understanding of how the business operates beyond engineering. 

Mentorship played an important role during this period. Leaders who emphasised continuous learning and improvement guided his development and encouraged him to approach challenges with openness and discipline. These experiences shaped how he approaches both work and leadership today. 

What began as a technical position gradually expanded to include commercial responsibilities and leadership. He learned to balance engineering considerations with timelines, cost requirements and customer expectations. Today, he leads operations at Sime Darby Energy Solutions Sdn. Bhd., where his role requires both technical understanding and business perspective. 

“It is no longer just about finding solutions, but ensuring they can be delivered effectively and sustainably,” he says. 

Leadership also brought a new level of responsibility. Managing a team of about twenty individuals, he focuses not only on performance and delivery, but also on supporting their growth and development. He acknowledges that managing people is one of the most challenging aspects of the role, yet also one of the most meaningful. He identifies strongly with Sime’s values of integrity, collaboration and care, which he sees reflected in how teams work together and support one another. For him, progress is always collective. Success is achieved through shared effort and trust. 

His sense of purpose is closely tied to the impact of his work. In his current role, he contributes to delivering power generation solutions that support Malaysia’s energy needs. Beyond operational outcomes, he sees this as contributing to economic progress and more efficient use of resources. 

Exposure has also been an important part of his journey. Through opportunities in Thailand, Japan, the United States, China and Australia, he gained valuable hands-on experience in technical projects, specialised training and strategic engagements. He contributed to initiatives to drive efficiency, support factory testing and to bring new knowledge to strengthen team capabilities. These experiences broadened his perspective and strengthened his ability to translate global best practices into practical improvements, reinforcing the importance of continuous learning and adaptability. They also reflect how the organisation actively invests in developing its people, empowering them to grow and deliver greater value to the business. 

Ashok also continues to invest in his own development. He recently completed his Project Management Professional certification and is working towards his Professional Engineer qualification, which has long been a personal goal. He sees growth as ongoing, both professionally and personally. 

For young Malaysians entering the workforce, his advice is shaped by experience. While financial considerations are important, they should not be the only factor in choosing a career path. He encourages looking at long term growth, learning opportunities and purpose. Over more than a decade with Sime, he has experienced the organisation’s ability to adapt across industries and changing conditions. Through these shifts, one constant has been the opportunities available for those willing to grow within the Group.
