Mr Lee Smith, Male, 53, an Australian, is the Group Chief Safety Officer of Sime Darby Berhad. He was appointed on 1 April 2025.
Mr Smith joined the Hastings Deering Group in January 2023 as General Manager, Health, Safety, and Sustainability. He brings over 20 years of global experience in senior roles across health, safety, sustainability, environmental, and risk management functions within the mining, manufacturing, and transportation sectors.
With his extensive expertise, Mr Smith leads the Group’s HSE and risk policy agenda. His notable achievements include embedding enterprise-wide risk management systems, delivering key strategic initiatives, and developing and implementing a global learning and development strategy..
Prior to joining Hastings Deering, Mr Smith held several senior leadership positions, including Vice President – Health, Safety, Environment, Training, and Risk at Dyno Nobel and Incitec Pivot Fertilisers. He also served as Group Manager – Health, Safety, Training, and Risk at Xstrata Coal Queensland.
Mr Smith holds a Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from the Australasian College of Health and Safety, a Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety from Central Queensland University, and a Graduate Diploma in Minerals Industry Risk Management (MINE7033 – Establish Risk Management Systems) from the University of Queensland. He is also a member of the Central Queensland Institute of TAFE, the Mines Regulation & Coal Mining Board, and the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE.
