As we celebrate Malaysia Day, we’re reminded of the strength that lies in unity, diversity and shared purpose. At Sime, these values are reflected in the people who drive our business forward across the nation.

Alleycia Ng’s career at Tractors Petroleum Services (TPS), a subsidiary of Sime Industrial, spans an impressive 16 years. Based in Miri, Sarawak, she started her career as a General Clerk in a two-person department where it was just her and her supervisor. She quickly learned the ropes, taking on diverse responsibilities and adapting to new challenges. One of the early challenges was when she was asked to temporarily fill in at the PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) office for six months. The prospect of stepping into a new environment, learning a different system, meeting new people and handling the pressure of working with a major client was daunting. Alleycia recalls feeling nervous and scared, but she also found strength in the support of those around her.

Returning to TPS, Alleycia moved to the Parts Department, a shift that brought its own set of challenges. She jokes about it, thinking “Why me again?” But she embraced the opportunity, guided by the familiar philosophy her boss often repeats which is “It’s all part of the journey.” She believed that every detour is preparing her for her future possibilities and she was right.

Alleycia stayed in the Parts Department for quite some time, discovering that every move demanded new knowledge, new systems and the ability to adapt to different workflows. At the outset, she leaned on the guidance of colleagues at the Sime industrial Miri office, whose collaboration proved invaluable. A core duty became the annual stock take, a task requiring precision and accountability. This period was also defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, adding layers of complexity to day-to-day operations. Team members had to continue supporting customers while navigating constraints and Alleycia reflects on this era as a test of resilience that strengthened the team.

After several years, Alleycia transitioned again, this time to the Accounts Department, where she continues to apply her experience and adaptability. Each move, though challenging, strengthened her skills and broadened her perspective across different areas of the business.

As someone who has witnessed the company’s growth over the years, Alleycia believes what sets TPS apart from its competition is the generous support and benefits offered to employees which is a reflection of Sime’s commitment to its people.

Reflecting on her proudest moments working at TPS, Alleycia highlights the harmony of a multicultural workplace. In Sarawak, colleagues from region, race and religion come together as one team, often forming friendships that extend beyond the office. This spirit of inclusivity, she notes, is what makes Sarawak and Malaysia truly special.

Her story also carries the pride of working in Miri, the birthplace of Malaysia’s oil and gas industry. The city’s rich heritage, shaped by decades of innovation and community growth, continues to inspire generations of Malaysians in the sector.

With years of experience behind her, Alleycia believes that young Malaysians entering the petroleum services industry should approach their careers with curiosity and resilience. The industry, she notes, is dynamic and constantly evolving, requiring both technical ability and the right mindset. For her, adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning are the qualities that open doors to success.

As Malaysia marks this meaningful day, Alleycia’s journey reminds us of the values we uphold at Sime are unity, growth and gratitude for the people who strengthen our communities. Together, we celebrate Malaysia Day with pride, as one Sime and one nation.
