As Malaysia celebrates another year of independence, it is a timely moment to reflect on the values that define our nation, such as unity, resilience and progress.

At 22 years old, Wan Zaidil Abrar Wan Askar, a vocational trainee at Sime Industrial Academy, is proof that passion, perseverance and the right development opportunities can unlock success.

Growing up, Wan Zaidil had always been aware of his strength in hands-on technical learning rather than theory-focused academic streams. After graduating with flying colours from Matang Vocational College in Kuching with a diploma in electric technology, as well as two other vocational certificates, he worked as a technician to install alarm systems, closed circuit televisions and automatic gates and doors.

His career took a pivotal turn when he was selected for YSD Skill Enrichment – Professional Certificate Programme (PROCERT), a partnership between Malaysia government’s Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Division, Yayasan Sime Darby and Sime Industrial Academy. PROCERT empowers young talented individuals with hands-on training in heavy equipment operations and related skills.

“In the first week, I saw many government agencies and private companies attending training and classes here,” he recalled. “This tells me that the academy has a strong reputation, strengthening my confidence in pursuing my goals.”

At Sime Industrial Academy, Wan Zaidil did not just learn; he also had the opportunity to lead fellow students and bridge gaps with academy leadership and instructors. With his natural ability to establish good working relationships, he successfully facilitated the alignment of instructor schedules with the Academy’s management, enhancing learning time and the effectiveness of the students’ learning process.

Notably, he received multiple job offers prior to completing his studies at the academy, an achievement he takes pride in. He was also happy to receive offers from Sime Industrial branches in his hometown in Sarawak, which would allow him to be close to his family.

Wan Zaidil draws inspiration from instructors who have demonstrated unwavering dedication and expertise, implementing proactive and engaging approaches when guiding classmates through learning materials in class. To him, success stems from collective wins rather than individual achievements–a ship can’t sail smoothly without a strong crew.

Believing continuous and collaborative learning is key to mastering any skill, he remarked, “I strive to practise humility and always be open to guidance from those I consider mentors, which are not only instructors, but also knowledgeable classmates, with whom I regularly exchange insights and ideas.”

He also found joy in memorable moments with peers, from sharing laughter and delicacies at gatherings to building bonds as they faced the challenges of study life together, including  disciplinary jogs around the yard with his classmates.

Wan Zaidil commends Sime Industrial Academy for its top-tier learning environment, which immerses students in an industrial setting mirroring actual workplace. Backed by Sime Industrial, a leader in Malaysia's industrial equipment sector with decades of hands-on expertise, the academy offers unparalleled access to industry knowledge and best practices. Alongside availability of training equipment, the academy’s reputable TVET courses provide work-ready exposure for him to pursue opportunities in industries he is passionate about, such as shipping, marine and oil and gas.

If given the chance to train peers in a technical subject, he would choose industrial equipment, noting that Malaysia’s rapid development fuels growing demand for skilled operators and technicians of heavy machinery.

For youths keen to pursue TVET education, he advises, Today, pursuing TVET is easier than ever with initiatives by government and accredited private institutions. Some government institutions provide accommodation, monthly allowances and meal allocations. Many accredited private centres registered under the Department of Skills Development (JPK) also offer flexible payment methods, including Employee Provider Fund (EPF) withdrawals and education loans under Skills Development Fund Corporation (PTPK).”

With his placement at the Sime Industrial Kuching branch on the horizon, he hopes more peers will seize opportunities in the industrial equipment industry, a field where growing demand meets low competition, offering vast career opportunities.

Wan Zaidil’s journey, from a high-performing vocational student to achieving technical excellence at Sime Industrial Academy, is a story we are proud to share. His success embodies the transformative power of education paired with determination, adaptability and a collaborative spirit.

We remain committed to nurturing young talents like Wan Zaidil, equipping them with the skills to thrive in Malaysia’s dynamic industries.
